Cedar Crest Improves in Home Opener, But Loses to Goucher 3-1

9/4/2010 12:00:00 AM

Allentown, PA - On Saturday, the Cedar Crest College field hockey team showed a flash of some sorely-needed offensive strength in its home opener against non-conference foe Goucher, but ultimately lost 3-1.

Cedar Crest drew first blood, scoring just over six minutes into the game on a goal by senior Adrienne Maurer (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) with an assist from junior Tammy Gruzdis (Allentown, PA/Liberty). Goucher responded with three goals in the remainder of the first half, including two by Catherine Armao, on 16 shots. But that was all the scoring seen on the day as the Falcons made some halftime adjustments and picked things up defensively, holding the Gophers to just three shots and no goals in the second half. Cedar Crest goalkeeper Lindsay Harrison (Hanover, PA/Littlestown) had 10 saves in 70 minutes in cage, but couldn't overcome the Gopher's first half offensive flurry. Goucher took 19 shots in the game, to Cedar Crest's seven.

Cedar Crest drops to 0-2 overall on the season, while Goucher improves to 1-1.

The Falcons will play at home again on Sunday against Hood College in non-league action. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
