Box Score
Clarks Summit, PA - Baptist Bible College placed four players in double figures to defeat visiting Cedar Crest College in Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Wednesday. The final score was 86-64.
The Falcons kept things close in the early going, with several ties and lead changes before their final lead of the game, 14-13 at the 11:16 mark in the first half following a Denyell Spingola (East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale-Ray) jumper. Spingola had eight points in the first half and a career-high 12 for the game. But the Defenders began to slowly build their lead with a 32-15 stretch that resulted in a 45-29 halftime score. Last season's CSAC Rookie of the Year, Kacee Rava, had a a lot to do with that, contributing 13 first-half points on six of seven shooting.
Cedar Crest's halftime adjustments centered around the lack of hustle apparent in the first half. The Falcons were outrebounded 27 to nine, for example, and rather than work the ball inside against Rava, they settled for low-percentage outside shots. They shot as many three's (16) as inside shots in the first half.
Despite the Defenders scoring six unanswered points to open the second half, Cedar Crest took their halftime admonishment to heart and played a much scrappier, up-tempo brand of basketball in the second half. The Falcons pulled down a much more equitable 20 rebounds to the Defenders 23, and had just seven turnovers to Baptist Bible's 13. They slowly chipped away at the lead, but could get no closer than 11 points, 55-44, at the 11:42 to play mark on a Mattie Hallquist (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) layup. The Defenders quickly ran the margin back up to about 20, were it stayed for the balance of the game.
Senior Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) led all scorers with 20 points, and sophomore Amber Wehry (Klingerstown, PA/Tri-Valley Jr/Sr) had 14 points and eight rebounds. Junior Megan DeMutis (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic) had seven points and seven boards. Cedar Crest shot just 32.9% for the game.
The Defenders' Ruthie Butts had 19 points, and Rava finished with 17. Melanie Williams had 11 points and 15 boards.
With the loss, Cedar Crest drops to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the CSAC. Baptist Bible improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Conference. Next up, the Falcons continue their road swing with a trip to CSAC North opponent Marywood on Saturday, December 3rd, at 1:00 PM.
