Allentown, PA - On Monday, playing the majority of the game in a driving rain and after waiting out an interruption for lightning, Cedar Crest fell to visiting non-conference opponent Elmira College by a score of 6-2.
The wet and sloppy conditions lent an air of unpredictability to the game, and especially hampered the goalkeepers who struggled to find solid footing.
The Falcons started sluggishly. Elmira scored goals in the 6th, 13th, and 21st minutes to take a 3-0 lead by halftime, while Cedar Crest had taken just three shots on goal in the half, all of which were saved.
Although the Eagles racked up two more goals early in the second half, the Falcons noticeably picked up the intensity. They took almost three times as many shots in the second half as they did in the first, although they were unable to cash in on any of them until the final 10 minutes when both Brittany Hartman (Myerstown, PA/Eastern Lebanon County) and Emily Rodenberger (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) scored unassisted.
Cedar Crest actually outshot Elmira 19-13, and had 12 penalty corners to the Eagles' five. But the sloppy conditions affected shooting accuracy and, coupled with 12 saves by Lauren Thomas, served to keep the Falcons on the losing side of the ledger.
Following the loss, Cedar Crest drops to 6-9 overall and remains 2-3 in the CSAC. Elmira improves to 4-7 and is 2-3 in the Empire 8. On Wednesday, October 17th, the Falcons will travel to Scranton for a conference game at Marywood University at 7:00 PM.
