Shannon Wenner (Drums, PA/MMI Preparatory) hit her second home run of the year as Cedar Crest softball swept a doubleheader over Cairn University (1-14,CSAC 1-7) with score of 7-2 and 9-1 in conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first game Cedar Crest (3-8,CSAC 2-5) putting up good defense going three up, three down in the first two innings and while getting four hits they couldn't quite get them into scoring position. With tough defense from both teams the game remained 0-0 until top of the fourth. Cairn University's Kelly Hendrickson hit a double who then scored when fellow Highlander Brigid Shehan hit another double. Junior Kristen Hubler would also get a hit to bring in another run making it 2-0 Carin bottom of the fourth inning.
The Falcons really alive in the bottom of the 5
th, with the leadoff batter
Jeniffer Hallowell (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh). Hallowell hit a double, but earned herself a triple with smart base running and an error from the Highlanders.
Alyson Mason (Salem, CT/East Lyme) would bring Hallowell in with a single. Junior captain
Shannon Wenner (Drums, PA/MMI Preparatory) would hit for a single to get on base. After a passed ball from the catcher, Mason took off from third and scored for the Falcons.
Laura Swanhall (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) notched another great hit to bring in Wenner.
Kali Jones (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville Area HS) would earn an RBI after crushing the ball to the fence for a triple. This put the Falcons in the lead 4-2 to start the sixth inning.
Hallowell at bat again, would get a single to get on base. Mason would move her into scoring position with a single. After a passed ball Hallowell headed for home plate as Mason moved to second. Wenner drove a pitch to deep right for her second homerun of the year.
With that win Cedar Crest became 3-8 overall.
In the second game, the Highlanders came out strong with a homerun by Sophomore Brigid Shehan who hit hard to centerfield to put Cairn on the board first 1-0.
The Falcons came right back with singles from Hallowell and
Tammy Touhsaent (Mertztown, PA/Kutztown Area) and triple from first basemen Wenner.
Natalia Dial (Kannapolis, PA/Jesse C. Carson) would earn an RBI making the score 3-1, Falcons in the lead.
The Highlanders couldn't get passed the Falcon's tough defense in the second inning. Hallowell and Touhsaent second time at bat would lead to back to back singles. Hallowell would steal home on a passed ball and Touhsaent would score of a double from Wenner bringing the score to 5-1.
After the third inning the score remained 5-1 in favor of Cedar Crest and after another three up three down inning they would put in another team effort offensively. Junior catcher Touhsaent would get things started with a hard hit single down the third base line. With Wenner on third, senior outfielder Swanhall would rally on two outs and hit a triple. Also adding to base runners would be
Kali Jones (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville Area HS) and
Paige Vandermeer (Pottsville/Pottsville Area HS) as well as a single from
Alicia Zook (Hughesville, PA/Hughesville High School ) who brought in Swanhall closing out the fourth inning, 9-1. Cedar Crest would hold on the win after three quick outs.
The Falcons are now 5-8 overall after sweeping their second consecutive double headers.
The Falcons will be on the road next game Saturday, April 6
th for another Colonial State Athletic Conference doubleheader against Baptist Bible College at 1:00 p.m.
