Cedar Crest College Field Hockey Pre-Season Preview

8/27/2014 10:17:00 PM

Heading into the 2014 Field Hockey the Cedar Crest College Field Hockey is very optimistic.  When asked what she was expecting from her team this season Head Coach Cindy Joseph thought first of her returning players, "The leadership from the returning upperclassmen will be key in all success we experience".  Returning for the Falcons include leading scorer for the Falcons Junior Emily Rodenberger (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) who last season totaled 11 goals, seven more than the second place scorer on the team Vivianna Smite who would finish her sophomore season with four goals.  As a team in 2013, the Falcons scored 20 goals with 11 assists for 51 total points.  Other returners include seniors Jessica Sanbeg (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley), and Chelsea Thompson (Coatesville, PA/Collegium Charter School).  Juniors returning include Rodenberger, Samite and Alexis Malone (Jamaica, NY/Queens Gateway to Health Secondary School).  As for the sophomores the team welcomes back Samantha VanBeers (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley), Selena Contreras (Catasauqua, PA/Catasauqua) and Rachel Stump (Fleetwood, PA/Fleetwood).

The Falcons also added five new players to the program for 2014.  "We are looking forward to a strong showing from our incoming freshman class".  Said Joseph.  The new players are listed below:

2014 Incoming Players
  • Andi Dargis (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) - East Hampton, NY - East Hampton High School - "Andi will look to start in goal for the Falcons.  She is an aggressive goalkeeper who will fit in well with the current defensive strategy."

  • Hannah Gouck (Kintnersville, PA/Palisades) - Kintnersville, PA - Palisades High School - "Hannah is a versitile player with great speed.  She is an Academic All-Star and is looking to earn time both as a position and utility player."

  • Elizabeth Michas (Moravia, NY/Moravia Central) - Moravia, NY - Moravia Central School - "Casey is a strong defender looking to make an immediate impact on the defensive line and the defensive corner unit.  A two-sport athlete, Casey will also be a member of the basketball team."

  • Kailen Moyer (Lenhartsville, PA/Kutztown Area) - Lenhartsville, PA - Kutztown High School - "Kailen is a scorer who is looking to make an immediate impact on the forward line.  She is an Academic All-American who will continue her success as a Falcon."

  • Kelsey Ward (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Towne Charter) - Philadelphia, PA - Franklin Towne Charter High School - "Kelsey is an All-Area defender.  She looks to take over the center back position in an already strong defensive line.  A two-sport athlete, Kelsey will also be a member of the lacrosse team."

*All quotes compliments of Head Field Hockey Coach Cindy Joseph.  The Falcons also added to the staff for 2014 by welcoming former CCC goalie Falynn Strohl who finished her career with 50 career saves and now ranks 5th all-time in Cedar Crest Field Hockey history.

As for her upcoming season, the Falcons have always said family comes first, "We will play as we have practiced; as a family" said Joseph and "While we looking forward to all of our games, our conference games will be both our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity to showcase the results of our hard work."

The Falcons open up the season this week as they travel to Houghton College in New York before turning right around and welcome Kings College on September 3rd for their home opener.  The Falcons first home conference game will be played against the Mighty Macs when they travel to Immaculata on September 27th.
