Field Hockey Stumbles at Wilson

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa - The Cedar Crest College field hockey team was defeated 5-3 on the road at Wilson College on Wednesday evening.

In the first half, sophomore Makenzie Kistler (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton) was the first to get a shot off for the Falcons, but the Phoenix came up with the save. Freshman Mercedes Melo (Lehighton, Pa./Palmerton Area) took a penalty corner with freshman Annalise Unger (Burlington, VT /Rice Memorial ) taking a shot, but was stopped by the Wilson goalie. After another corner taken by Melo, Kistler took her second shot of the game but it was saved. The Phoenix were the first to get on the scoreboard, after shooting just past sophomore goalie Cassandra Reijgers (Hollis, NH/Hollis Brookline). The Phoenix took another shot, but was saved by Reijgers. Wilson scored again, beating Reijgers on the left. The Phoenix were in the lead 2-0 going into half time. 

The Phoenix were first to score in the second half off of a penalty corner, shooting past sophomore goalie Emma Ryan. Melo took a corner for the Falcons, giving the ball to Unger, who shot but was stopped by the Phoenix goalie. At the 49th minute mark, Unger passed the ball to Melo, who beat the Wilson goalie to put one on the board for the Falcons. The Phoenix answered back with a goal of their own, bringing the score to 4-1. At the 54th minute mark, Melo took a corner, giving the ball to sophomore Madison Bowen ( Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area Senior). Bowen passed it off to Unger who took a shot and scored, lifting the score 4-2. After a pass from freshman Ally Arabio, Melo took the ball and sent it past the keeper to give the Falcons another point, scoring her second goal of the game. The Phoenix got the ball into the Falcon half and took back-to-back shots, both being saved by Ryan. Senior Elizabeth Lamm had a defensive save after Wilson shot the ball at the 68th minute mark, but the Phoenix scored again, bringing the score to 5-3. Ryan tallied three saves for the Falcons in the second half. 

The Falcons travel to Elms College to take on Bay Path University on September 30. The game is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
