Field Hockey clinches CSAC Playoff Berth with 2-0 shutout of Bryn Athyn

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest Field Hockey squad shutout Bryn Athyn College 2-0 to clinch a berth in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs on Tuesday evening.

The Falcons are now 6-7 this season, with a conference record of 4-2 after tonight's playoff-clinching win.

"One of our team goals this season was to make playoffs", stated Head Coach Amber Auchenbach. "With this win, we have met this goal."

After earning eight shots and five corners in the first half, either team managed to score, but the second half would a different game. The Falcons took 11 shots in the second and earned nine corners that assist the Black and Yellow to scoring twice. Sophomore Mercedes Melo (Lehighton, Pa./Palmerton Area) was the first one to score for Cedar Crest, scoring off a pass from freshman Serena Shuler (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) in the 53rd minute. The final goal was scored with just five seconds remaining in the contest, that had junior Alexx Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Mechanicsburg Area) blast a shot off of a penalty corner taken by Melo that got past the Lions keeper to put the final score at 2-0.

Auchenbach exclaimed, "I am very proud of how hard the team has worked this season, but it is not over yet for us!"

Junior goalkeeper Emma Ryan (Sterling, Va./Park View) earned her second win of the season with posting a shutout. Ryan recorded one save out of the four total shots that Bryn Athyn took in the contest.

"Our defense held strong today for the shutout and it was great to keep them to only four shots," concluded Auchenbach.

The Falcons next game will be Saturday, October 20 when they travel to Wilson College for a CSAC match. First whistle is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
