ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team suffered an overtime loss, 3-2, to King's College (Pa.) in its season opener in non-conference action at the FalconPlex on Thursday evening.
The Monarchs got on the board first, with the goal coming from junior Jessie Smalley (Newton, N.J.) in the sixth minute for first goal of the season. King's would tack on another in the 13
th minute on a marker from freshman Hannah Chocallo (Wilkes Barre, Pa.). The assist was awarded to senior Danielle Runo (Tamiment, Pa.).
After a scoreless second, the Falcons netted two goals in the third quarter to pull even. Freshman
Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit) registered the first off an assist from junior
Emily Demarest (Hamburg, N.J./Vernon Township) while junior
Amber Cieri (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) set up classmate
Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) for the equalizer over six minutes later.
Sophomore Sarah Zaleppa (Mountain Top, Pa.) went on to score the game-winner in the 67th minute for the 3-2 final
The Monarchs recorded 15 shots to Cedar Crest's 10 on the night. King's also held the edge in penalty corners, 7-4.
Freshman
Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) got the start in cage for the Falcons, making six saves in the loss. Sophomore Ellie Glatz (Exeter, Pa.) picked up the win for the Monarchs and converted five saves.
Cedar Crest will return to action on Wednesday, September 8 when they host Neumann University. The contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
