Field Hockey Clipped in OT By King's (Pa.) in Season Opener

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team suffered an overtime loss, 3-2, to King's College (Pa.) in its season opener in non-conference action at the FalconPlex on Thursday evening.

The Monarchs got on the board first, with the goal coming from junior Jessie Smalley (Newton, N.J.) in the sixth minute for first goal of the season. King's would tack on another in the 13th minute on a marker from freshman Hannah Chocallo (Wilkes Barre, Pa.). The assist was awarded to senior Danielle Runo (Tamiment, Pa.).

After a scoreless second, the Falcons netted two goals in the third quarter to pull even. Freshman Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit) registered the first off an assist from junior Emily Demarest (Hamburg, N.J./Vernon Township) while junior Amber Cieri (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) set up classmate Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) for the equalizer over six minutes later.

Sophomore Sarah Zaleppa (Mountain Top, Pa.) went on to score the game-winner in the 67th minute for the 3-2 final

The Monarchs recorded 15 shots to Cedar Crest's 10 on the night. King's also held the edge in penalty corners, 7-4.

Freshman Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) got the start in cage for the Falcons, making six saves in the loss. Sophomore Ellie Glatz (Exeter, Pa.) picked up the win for the Monarchs and converted five saves.
