BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College soccer team edged Bryn Athyn College in a 3-2 final on Saturday afternoon at General Ronald K. Nelson Field in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match.
"It was an incredible effort by our group today against a very good Bryn Athyn team," said Head Soccer Coach
Jesse Zafiratos. "It's never easy to win on the road at this level, and for us to find a way just shows how much it means to us a group."
The Falcons netted a pair of goals in the opening half. Sophomore
Abril Riley (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) found the back of the net in the 31
st minute off an assist from graduate student
Ashley Whittaker (Huntersville, N.C. /Hopewell ). Cedar Crest padded its lead in the 40
th minute when senior
Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) netted a penalty shot to go up 2-0.
The Lions got on the scoreboard in the 48
th minute on a marker from graduate student Ashley Rivera (Southampton, Pa.) while the assist was credited to sophomore Maria Storck (Philadelphia, Pa.) to make it 3-1. Riley answered back for Cedar Crest with her second goal of the game, which came in the 53
rd minute.
Rivera would add another marker in the 89
th minute to send it to the 3-2 final.
Senior
Lauren Makely (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) was credited with the win in goal for the Falcons, making four saves. First-year Chloe Munyon (Bensalem, Pa.) converted nine saves for the Lions.
Cedar Crest had a 22-15 advantage in shots and had seven corner kicks to three for the Lions.
Cedar Crest (6-3-2 overall, 3-0-1 CSAC) starts a four-match homestand on Wednesday, October 12 against Cairn University at 6:00 p.m. Bryn Athyn (6-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 CSAC) remains home and will welcome in the University of Valley Forge on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start.
