Basketball Tripped Up By Baruch

NEWARK, N.J. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team suffered a 75-53 setback to Baruch College on Sunday afternoon at the John K. Adams Women's Basketball Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Rutgers-Newark.

First-year D'Andre McRae (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored 20 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Bearcats. Sophomore Mia Castillo (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) added a double-double of 16 points and 12 assists, while adding six rebounds, two blocks, and four steals in 32 minutes. Sophomore Paige Traynor (Wayne, N.J.) was the only other Baruch student-athlete with a double-digit scoring game registering 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting.

The teams were separated by just two points at the end of the first quarter, with the Bearcats holding a 17-15 advantage. The Bearcats had the scoring edge in the second stanza, 14-9, to carry a 31-24 lead into the half.

Baruch used a huge 31-10 third quarter to build as large as a 30-point lead after a three-pointer by Traynor to make the score 62-32 with 1:43 remaining in the frame.

The Falcons were able to trim the deficit in half, down to 15 following a jumper by first-year Haivynn Kovach (Virginia, Beach, Va./Churchland) with 3:08 to go in regulation to make the score 67-52, however the Bearcats finished on an 8-1 run to capture the 75-53 final.

Senior Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) paced Cedar Crest with 22 points on 9-for-26 shooting to go along with eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Kovach followed with nine points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) added seven points and 11 boards.

Cedar Crest (0-2 overall) will stay on the road for a contest at Lehman College on Saturday, November 19 at noon. Baruch (3-0 overall) will travel to the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a non-league tilt on Wednesday, November 16 at 6:00 p.m.
