Valley Forge Sneaks Past Basketball in CSAC Play

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team dropped a 63-59 contest at the University of Valley Forge on Monday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at The Pit.

The Patriots outscored the Falcons 13-4 in the fourth quarter to secure their second straight victory, improving to 6-13 overall and 6-10 in league play. Senior Amaya Brown (Trenton, N.J.) scored a game-high 29 points, including knocking down 7-of-9 triples, along with two rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Freshman Jessi Manning (Paterson, N.J.) joined Brown in double figures with a double-double of 14 points and 13 boards.

Cedar Crest (5-14 overall, 4-12 CSAC) was led by 26 points from junior Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), who recorded her 11th game of 20-plus points this season. Classmates Jenna McDonald (Ovid, N.Y./South Seneca) and Kelly Reid (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) finished with double-digit scoring games with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

The Patriots raced out to a 9-0 advantage and built as large as an 11-point lead (15-4) after freshman Mariah Matthews (Baltimore, Md.) knocked down a free throw with 5:07 remaining. The Falcons closed the gap with a 13-4 over the remainder of the quarter to trim the deficit to four at the end of one, 21-17.

The contest stayed close for most of the second quarter. Cedar Crest grabbed its first lead of the game when senior Amiyah Peters (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) knocked down a jumper with 2:04 left to make the score 35-33. The Falcons pushed the lead to four following two free throws by Reid, but Brown converted a three to make the score 37-36 at the half.

The Falcons were able to pull out in front in the third quarter, building an eight-point lead and held a 55-50 advantage heading into the final frame.

The Patriots put the clamps on the defensive end and limited Cedar Crest to four points in the fourth quarter. Valley Forge outscored the Falcons 10-4 over the first 7:41 of the frame to grab its first lead of the stanza, 60-59. The Patriots then tacked on three points to secure the eventual final, 63-59.

Cedar Crest will have its regular season road finale on Wednesday, February 16 at Saint Elizabeth University. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. Valley Forge will travel to Notre Dame of Maryland University for its regular season finale on Wednesday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m.
