Basketball Held Off By Keystone, 62-45

LA PLUME, Pa. – Keystone College never trailed en route to a 62-45 victory over Cedar Crest College on Wednesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's basketball action at the Gambal Athletic Center.

First-year Kyleigh Monk (Havre de Grace, Md.) led the Giants with 23 points and added three rebounds and one assist as Keystone (8-12 overall, 7-6 CSAC) took the season series from the Falcons, 2-0. First-year Kaitlyn Slaboda (Taylor, Pa.) chipped in with 15 points, eight boards, three assists, and four blocks.

Senior Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) paced Cedar Crest (1-12 overall, 1-10 CSAC) with a game-high 24 points while first-year Jordan McGhee (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) contributed eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a steal. Sophomore Rachel Bilger (Philadelphia, Pa./Upper Dublin) registered six points and a career-high 17 boards. The Falcons shot just 24 percent from the floor in the contest and went 4-for-26 from three-point range.

The Giants shot 43 percent in the first quarter, including 4-for-12 from distance, to cling to a 16-10 advantage aver the opening 10 minutes.

Wilson started the second quarter with a triple for Cedar Crest and later climbed back to within four (19-15) after a pair of successful free throws by McGhee with 6:53 to play in the second stanza. Keystone then finished the quarter on an 11-0 run to enter the half with a 15-point margin, 30-15.

The Falcons trailed by as many as 21 points in the third quarter following a three-pointer from first-year Kwashanti Holmes (Yonkers, N.Y.) to make the score 40-19 with 4:48 to go. Cedar Crest answered back with a 10-3 spurt to trim the deficit to 14, 43-29, with one frame to play.

The Falcons pulled to within as few as 10 in the fourth quarter, but the lead went up to as many as 22  (62-40) before the final buzzer after a layup by Slaboda with 2:02 remaining in regulation. Keystone would eventually go onto take the contest by the 17-point final, 62-45.  

Cedar Crest will next host the University of Valley Forge on Saturday, February 4 at noon. Keystone returns to action at home against Notre Dame of Maryland University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
