Basketball Tripped Up at Bryn Athyn, 60-35

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team was tripped up by Bryn Athyn College in a 60-35 final in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest on Saturday afternoon at Asplundh Field House.

The Lions started hot and outscored the Falcons 17-2 in the first quarter. The Falcons responded in the second stanza and cut the deficit to single digits, thanks to a 10-4 run over the 4:55, which was capped off by a pair of free throws by first-year Jordan McGhee (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) to make the score 21-12. Bryn Athyn doubled up Cedar Crest, 6-3, over the remainder of the frame to carry a 12-point advantage into halftime, 27-15.

After sophomore Norma Thornhill (Washington, D.C.) knocked down a jumper to stretch the margin to 13, 31-18, the Falcons rattled five straight points, all by senior Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk), to cut the lead to eight, 41-23. Cedar Crest pulled to within single digits on two more occasions in the stanza, but the Lions used a late 7-1 spurt to enter the final quarter up by 15, 42-27.

Bryn Athyn began the fourth frame on an 8-0 run, finished off by a layup by senior Kaylia Duncan (Reading, Pa.) with 5:23 left in regulation. The margin reached as many as 28 (60-32) before finishing with the 60-35 score.

Duncan paced the Lions with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Thornhill contributed 11 points, five boards, four assists, four steals, and a block. Senior Kearah Henry (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the last Bryn Athyn player with double-digit points, turning in 10 points to go along with three rebounds, four assists, and one block.

Wilson tallied a game-high 18 points while adding four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. First-year Haivynn Kovach (Virginia Beach, Va./Churchland) accompanied Wilson in double-digits with 10 points, seven caroms, three assists, and two steals.

Cedar Crest (1-15 overall, 1-13 CSAC) will head to the University of Valley Forge for its next game on Monday, February 13 for a 7:00 p.m. tip. Bryn Athyn (12-9 overall, 10-5 CSAC) will conclude the conclude the regular season with a pair of road games, beginning on Wednesday, February 15 at Notre Dame of Maryland University in a 7:00 p.m. start.
