CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team started its spring season with a 9-0 loss to DeSales University on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs began the match with a sweep of doubles play. The DeSales first doubles team of junior Morgan Landau (Dallas, Pa.) and sophomore Nyah Tomlinson (Phillipsburg, N.J.) defeated the Falcons' tandem of juniors
Lily Spagnola (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and
Katherine Franzone (Mount Bethel, Pa./Pennsylvania Cyber Charter), 8-2. At second doubles, senior
Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and first-year
Katie Browning (Orefield, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) were defeated by sophomore Alyssa Vandenberge (Sykesville, Md.) and junior Hope Hoppe (Kunkletown, Pa.). The pair of senior
Brittany Schultz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and sophomore
Corinne O'Connor (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) fell at third doubles to junior Lindsay Shoemaker (Allentown, Pa.) and first-year Tara Clark (Lewisburg, Pa.) in an 8-0 final.
In singles play, Spagnola was taken down by Landau by a 6-0, 6-1 score at the No. 1 spot. Franzone fell to Tomlinson at No. 2 singles by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores. Wolf put up a fight at third singles, but was edged by Vandenberge 6-4 and 6-2. Browning was defeated by Hoppe at the No. 4 spot, 6-0 and 6-1. At fifth singles, Schultz lost to Shoemaker in a 6-0, 6-1 final.
The closest singles match of the day was at No. 6 between Clark and O'Connor. Clark took the opening set, 7-5 and then closed out the match with a 6-3 second-set win.
Cedar Crest (0-2 overall) will welcome in Penn State Abington for its home opener on Monday, March 27 for a 3:30 start.
