ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team lost a non-conference match to Kean University, 8-1 on Friday afternoon.
The Cougars began the match with a sweep of doubles play. Kean's first double pair of senior Samantha Paine Luu (Edison, N.J.) and junior Bianca Ortega (Roselle Park, N.J.) defeated the Falcons' junior tandem of
Katherine Franzone (Mount Bethel, Pa./Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) and
Lily Spagnola (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat), 8-3. First-year Maria Torres (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and junior Selina Maisonett (South Amboy, N.J.) took down senior
Taylor Wolf (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and first-year
Katie Browning (Orefield, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) at No. 2 by an 8-3 score. The Cedar Crest third doubles team of sophomore
Corinne O'Connor (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and junior
Megan Fiedler (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) were edged by sophomore Molly Gomez (Carteret, N.J.) and first-year Madison Thornhill-Burke (West Orange, N.J.), 8-6.
Kean secured five of the six singles matches. Paine Luu beat Spagnola at the No. 1 by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. Ortega captured the point at second singles, defeating Franzone 6-4, 6-2. Torres got by Wolf at No. 3 with scores of 6-4 and 6-2. Maisonett took down Browning by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores at fourth singles while Thornhill-Burke was victorious at the No. 6 spot, 6-1 and 6-2.
Senior
Brittany Schultz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded the lone point for the Falcons at fifth singles, defeating Gomez in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-3.
Cedar Crest (3-8 overall) will take on Penn State Abington in its next match on Wednesday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. for its regular season finale. Kean (7-5 overall) returns to the court on Saturday, April 22 at Rutgers-Camden at 10:00 a.m.
