KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College tennis team dropped its fall season opener at Kutztown University in a 7-0 final on Friday afternoon at the Keystone Courts.
The Golden Bears captured all three doubles points to grab the 1-0 advantage. Senior Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa.) and junior Ava Lewis (Camp Hill, Pa.) topped first-years
Jamie Reid (York, Pa./Dover Area) and
Grace Huff (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville Area) at second doubles, 6-1, while the first doubles team of seniors
Katherine Franzone (Mount Bethel, Pa./Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) and
Brittany Schultz (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) were defeated by first-years Alejandra Vera (Manta, Ecuador) and Bieke Roovers (Leiden, Netherlands), 6-0.
Kutztown took four of the six singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 finals. Vera blanked Franzone at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and 6-0. Roovers took down Schultz 6-0 and 6-0 at the number two spot. Lewis defeated senior
Megan Fiedler (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) at No. 4 singles, 6-0 and 6-0, while first-year Sierra Smart (Kutztown, Pa.) beat Reid at fifth singles, 6-0 and 6-0. In the final two singles matches, Lazarchak defeated Browning at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0, while first-year Mallory Brarndt (Douglassville, Pa.) got by Huff at the No. 6 spot by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores.
Cedar Crest (0-1 overall) will travel to Hood College for its next match on Sunday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. Kutztown (1-1 overall) will head to the University of Scranton for its next contest on Sunday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m.
