Basketball Falls to Wilson, 75-67

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College basketball team suffered a 75-67 loss at Wilson College in United East Conference-Skye Division action on Tuesday night at Gannett Memorial Field House.

The first quarter was tight as neither team was able to build more than a three-point lead. With the Phoenix ahead 14-13 with just over a minute remaining, free throws from first-year Caylie Long (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove) and junior Bryanna Rivera (Reading, Pa./Greenfield (Mass.)) pushed the Falcons in front at the end of the opening frame, 15-14.

In the second quarter with the score 23-21 in favor of Wilson, Cedar Crest would put together an 11-2 run to build a seven-point advantage, 32-25 with under a minute to play in the half. The run was capped off by a jump shot by graduate student Nicole Sachman (Niles, Mich./Brandywine) with 57 seconds remaining. A three-point play from sophomore Lae Black (Laurel, Md.) with 17 ticks left cut the Falcons' margin to four heading into the break, 32-28.

The contest tightened back up in the third quarter with both teams trading leads. The Phoenix notched back-to-back buckets to start the stanza and knot the score at 32. A three-point play from Long put Cedar Crest back in front, 35-32. Neither team could create a sizable gap as both squads had separate three-point leads in the frame. In the final two minutes of the quarter with the score tied at 48, the Falcons outscored Wilson 4-3 to carry a 52-51 lead into the last stanza.

In the fourth quarter with the score at 56 with 7:01 left on the clock, the Phoenix went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 63-56. Wilson extended the margin to as many as eight, 70-62, with 1:32 left in regulation. Two straight bucks by the Falcons trimmed the margin to three, 70-67, with 57 seconds left, but the Phoenix knocked down five free throws in the final 23 seconds to secure the win, 75-67.

Long poured in a season-high 32 points to go along with a season-high 15 rebounds. The first-year converted half of her point total at the charity stripe, going 16-for-20. She also tallied four steals, two assists, and a block. Sachman recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and three assists in 40 minutes of action. Sophomore Jordan McGhee (Copperas Cove, Texas/Copperas Cove) was the final Cedar Crest student-athlete with double-digit points, registering 12 points, five caroms, two assists, and a steal.
