DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team lost to Delaware Valley University in a 4-1 final in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night at Robert A. Lipinski Field.
The Aggies registered three goals in the opening quarter to build its lead. Senior Paige Sammons (Seaford, Del.) tallied the first goal at 4:22 with the assist going to first-year Alex Graffius (Brigantine, N.J.). Graffius got involved in the scoring with a goal at 8:22. Graduate student Ashley Birmingham (Leesport, Pa.) was credited with the helper on the marker. Graffius then recorded her second goal of the contest at 9:22 to extend the Delaware Valley lead to 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The home team tacked on a goal in the second quarter when graduate student Sydney Keagle (Catonsville, Md.) found the back of the cage at 27:01. Birmingham picked up the assist on the goal as the score was extended to 4-0.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the third quarter as junior
Olivia Wanner (Lyons, Pa./Kutztown Area) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season at 44:10 to make the score 4-1, the eventual final.
Delaware Valley had a 20-6 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in corners. Juniors
Avery Daku (Northampton, Pa./Catasauqua),
Olivia Horninger (Friedens, Pa./Northern Lehigh), and Wanner tallied two shots apiece for Cedar Crest.
Sophomore Shaelynn Castanaga-Acerra (Vernon, N.J.) secured the win in goal for the Aggies, not registering a save in 30:02 of playing time. Graduate student Alyssa Rudd (Belvidere, N.J.) played the final 29:58 and recorded one save. Sophomore
Shelby Heater (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) was credited with six saves in goal in the loss for the Falcons.
Cedar Crest (3-7 overall) opens United East Conference play with its next contest at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m. Delaware Valley (3-8 overall) will head to Hood College for its next game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
