Field Hockey Falls to St. Mary's

Box Score ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team was defeated by St. Mary's College of Maryland, 6-0, in a United East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at the FalconPlex.

The Seahawks scored in every quarter en route to the win.

St. Mary's got on the scoreboard when junior Brenna Ziegler (Newark, Del.) found the back of the cage at 10:05 off assists from graduate student Anna Eaton (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior Jena Vanskiver (Fallston, Md.).

The Seahawks then deposited three goals in the second stanza to build a 4-0 advantage. Ziegler netted her second marker of the game at 19:00. Junior Emma Watkins (Frederick, Md.) then registered back-to-back goals at 22:35 and 23:31.

The visitors tacked on one tally in the third quarter as sophomore Elena Pasko (New Freedom, Pa.) put a shot home at 34:35, which was set up by senior Charlotte Horn (Schnecksville, Pa.) and Vanskiver to make the score 5-0.

St. Mary's added one more goal in the fourth quarter from the stick of junior Josie Shermeyer (Harrisburg, Pa.) at 48:09 for the 6-0 final.

First-year Sophia Kent (Chesterville, Md.) captured the win in goal for the Seahawks, not facing a shot. Sophomore Shelby Heater (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton Area) collected 17 saves in the setback for the Falcons.

St. Mary's held a 28-2 edge in the shot category and had 14 penalty corners to Cedar Crest's zero. Juniors Avery Daku (Northampton, Pa./Catasauqua) and Olivia Wanner (Lyons, Pa./Kutztown Area) each had a shot for the Falcons.

Cedar Crest (4-13 overall, 1-4 United East) will conclude its season on Thursday, October 31 in a home game against Southern Virginia University at 5:00 p.m. St. Mary's (8-10 overall, 5-0 United East) has qualified for the United East Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host fourth-seeded Penn State Harrisburg in a semifinal matchup on Saturday, November 2.
