ALLENTOWN, Pa. — The Cedar Crest College soccer team was edged by John Jay College, 1-0, on Wednesday night at the FalconPlex.
The first half showcased a defensive performance from the Falcons, anchored by senior
Bella Bozen's (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) efforts in goal. Bozen recorded multiple saves, denying shots from junior Natalie Mack (Folsom, Calif.) at both the first and 43rd minutes. Despite a close attempt by first-year
Sierra Krout (York, Pa./Dallastown Area), whose shot hit the crossbar at the 31st minute, the half concluded with neither team finding the back of the net, maintaining a 0-0 deadlock heading into the break.
The second half began with Cedar Crest quickly establishing defensive strength, as Bozen made a crucial save against a shot by Bloodhounds' sophomore Anna Wehr (Baldwin, N.Y.) just under a minute into play. Despite the Falcons' efforts, John Jay took the lead in the 58th minute when first-year Ava Lopez (St. Paul, Minn.) scored, capitalizing on an assist from Mack. First-year
Amiyah Carroll (Severn, Md./Old Mill Senior) responded with multiple attempts to level the score, including a notable shot on goal in the 72nd minute, but the Bloodhounds' junior goalkeeper, Anina Gut (Zurich, Switzerland), made key saves to maintain their lead, resulting in a 1-0 victory for the visitors.
Bozen made eight saves while allowing one goal in her 90 minutes of play. First-year
Laila Stevenson (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) recorded one shot on goal from her single attempt during the match. Carroll contributed three shots, with one of those on target. Krout added another shot to the team's total.
Lopez was instrumental for the John Jay, scoring the team's only goal, which was also the game-winner, out of her four shots with one on target. Mack contributed with an assist and led the team with six shots, four of which were on goal. Wehr was active in the attack, recording four shots with two on target. In goal, Gut secured the shutout, making two saves across 90 minutes of play to maintain her perfect record for the season.
