Allentown, PA - On Saturday, playing in their last home tri-match of the season, Cedar Crest went 0-2 against both visiting teams, although the matches were not at all similar.
The first match was against defending Colonial States Athletic Conference Champions Cabrini College, who convincingly demonstrated why they are again undefeated in the CSAC by beating the Falcons in straight sets, 25-13, 25-17, 25-17, and dominating in all statistical categories. For the Falcons, freshman Rebecca Grady (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch) was the go-to girl, finishing with nine kills, while freshman twins Deb and Jess Lobien (Lehighton, PA, Lehighton) led the team in assists and digs resepectively. Sophomore Amber Wehry (Klingerstown, PA/Tri-Valley Jr/Sr) had nine digs as well, but the Cavaliers were just a bit too much for the young Falcons to handle.
Cabrini also defeated Wesley 3-0 in the second match of the day.
The final match was the most interesting, if for no other reason than it featured Cedar Crest in a rematch against Wesley College, against whom the Falcons played earlier this season. On that occasion, the Falcons won 3-2 in a very even match, and the second go-around would be just as equal. This time it was the Wolverines who walked away with the victory, winning 3-2 by scores of 22-25, 28-26, 14-25, 27-25, and 16-14.
Despite losing by the razor-thin margin of six points over three sets, the Falcons were surprisingly dominant on paper. Grady continued to play well, leading all players in kills with 22 along with a .340 hitting percentage. Three Cedar Crest players had over 20 digs - Jess Lobien with 25, Nikole Johnson (Ashley, PA/Holy Redeemer) with 24, and Wehry with 21 - all beating Wesley's team-high of 17. Deb Lobien shined as well, with 53 assists, three aces, and 13 digs in the loss.
The Falcons are now 7-13 on the season overall and 1-7 in the CSAC. With the wins, Cabrini improves to 16-9 and is undefeated in the conference at 7-0. Wesley improves to 2-19 and 0-4 in the Capital Athletic Conference. Cedar Crest will look for another CSAC win on the road at Rosemont College on Wednesday, October 19th, at 7:00 PM.
