Gwynedd Valley, PA - The 4-2 Falcons, fresh off a two-win outing in last Saturday's tri-match, had a rude awakening as Colonial States Athletic Conference play began at Gwynedd-Mercy College on Wednesday.
Cedar Crest lost the match 3-0, but the sets were hardly similar. The Griffins had the Falcons back on their heels from the outset of the first set, never trailing and winning relatively easily by a score of 25-17. To their credit, Cedar Crest regrouped to play a much tighter second set, even rallying from a 24-21 set point deficit to take a 25-24 lead before falling 27-25. But that loss and the 2-0 deficit seemed to take the wind out of the Falcons' sails, as Gwynedd-Mercy jumped out to an early lead in the last set and never looked back, winning 25-17.
Cedar Crest freshman Kiersten Collins (Forest City, PA, Forest City Regional) led the Falcons with eight kills, while sophomore Amber Wehry (Klingerstown, PA, Tri-Valley) had seven kills and three aces. Freshman Deb Lobien (Lehighton, PA, Lehighton) had 21 assists. Freshman Nikki Johnson (Ashley, PA, Holy Redeemer) had 16 digs.
Cedar Crest is now 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC so far this season. Gwynedd-Mercy improves to 3-6 and 1-0 in the CSAC. The Falcons will look to regroup at home against Bryn Athyn College on Thursday, September 15, at 7:00 PM.
