Vixens Vanquish Falcons 5-0

9/18/2011 5:52:00 PM

Allentown, PA - A weekend swing through eastern Pennsylvania by Virginia-based Sweet Briar College to play on consecutive days at Bryn Mawr and Cedar Crest Colleges led to a rare Sunday game for the Falcons. But to the dismay of the Pennsylvania home fans, Bryn Mawr fell to the Vixens 1-0 on Saturday, and on Sunday Cedar Crest fared no better in a 5-0 loss.

Sweet Briar's Sarah Cooper opened the game up with two goals in the first 18 minutes before Falcon coach Cindy Joseph called a time out to issue some verbal encouragement. The breather seemed to help, as a rejuvenated Cedar Crest played with more urgency, at least on the defensive end, and kept the Vixens from finding the back of the cage again until they managed to squeeze in a goal with just :06 until the half.

After managing just one shot in the first half, some offensive adjustments were needed for the Falcons at halftime, which seemed to pay off. Cedar Crest, while still out-shot for the game, managed seven shots in the second half, although none resulted in goals. More offensive action kept the Vixens on defense and prevented them from scoring for more than 22 minutes in the second half, until fatigue allowed two more goals in the waning minutes, the second off a penalty stroke.

Junior goalie Lindsay Harrison (Hanover, PA, Littlestown) had 23 saves in a complete game. Lauren Salge (Robbinsville, NJ, Allentown) had three shots, and Heather Rice (Thurmont, MD, Catoctin)  had two.

Cedar Crest is now 0-3 overall on the season and Sweet Briar returns home 3-3. Neither team has begun conference play. Next up for the Falcons is a home game against DeSales on Thursday, September 22nd, which was rained out on the 8th. Game time is 4:00 PM.
