Box Score Allentown, PA (December 5, 2012) After losing on Monday night, 92-35 in their CSAC opener against Neumann University, the Falcons could have packed it in and started preparing for exams with an eye towards relaxing over winter break. Coach Taylor would have none of that knowing that the next two games on the schedule could be potential victories for his squad. Coming into this contest, Cairn University, formerly Philadelphia Biblical, found themselves on the losing end against the Knights on 87-55, on Thursday, November 29. A victory would mean a lot to the winner, with the Highlanders 0-5, 0-2 in conference, and the Falcons at 1-7, 0-1 in conference made this game even more intriguing.
Cedar Crest found themselves looking to end a 5 game skid and the Highlanders seemed to be the right team to have on the schedule at point in the season. The Falcons sank shot after shot, from the field and foul line in the closing minutes of the game to earn their second win of the season, 60-53 over Cairn. Cedar Crest freshman,
Kayleigh Keggan (Blairstown, NJ/Belvidere) led all scorers with 17 points, shooting 7-9 from the field and nailing 3-3 from the 3 point arc. She was one of four Falcons in double figures on the night; sophomore,
DeJanet Lantion (Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy) tallied 13 points, making 3-4 foul shots in the second half; senior,
Megan DeMutis (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic) and junior
Amber Wehry (Klingerstown, PA/Tri-Valley Jr/Sr) each tallied 10 apiece, the two veterans combined shot 3-6 from three and 5-5 from the foul line. The foursome picked the right time to gel offensively.
After the game was tied 2-2 at the 18:30 mark of the first half, Cedar Crest went on a 13-3 run, forcing Cairn to take the first time out of the contest. Coming out of the timeout, the Highlanders closed the gap with a 9-0 run of their own at 15-14. Wehry nailed a three, which Cairn answered with a bucket of her own. Over the final 5:07 of the first half, Cedar Crest extended their lead to 11 points at the break behind three point buckets from Keggan ; freshman,
Vivianna Samite (Oakridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp) and Spingola. Lantion added a jumper with 20 seconds remaining to end the scoring at 32-21 at half-time.
For most of the second half, Cedar Crest held an 8-11 point lead. At the 10:20 mark the Highlanders made their push. In a little more than two minutes, they outscored the Falcons 9-0, closing the margin to 43-41 with 7:43 remaining. Lantion cashed in on two free throws, for a 45-41 lead. The Falcons had two costly turnovers and a foul that allowed Cairn to tie and eventually take their first lead of the game at 47-45 with 4:55 on the clock. Thirty seconds later, DeMutis swished two free throws, to tie the game at 47 apiece. Cairn retook the lead on a jumper. Spingola, with nerves of steel, drains a three pointer to give the lead back to the Falcons with 3:46 remaining. Cedar Crest built a five point lead that Cairn cut to three, 54-51 with 1:47 left. DeMutis hits a three from deep in the right corner, to give the Falcons another six point lead at 57-51. Fifty seconds remaining, Cairn hits a jumper to cut the lead to four, 57-53, and then they send Wehry to the line for two free throws which she knocks down, 58-53 Cedar Crest. Keggan gets a steal with 18 seconds remaining, passes to Lantion who is fouled with seven seconds left. Lantion converts one of two free throws to seal the victory.
DeMutis and Lantion secured six rebounds apiece. Spingola, Wehry and DeMutis had three steals each and all three played 39 plus minutes for the game.
Cedar Crest will play Penn State Abington, Saturday, December 8, at 1:00 pm at Lees Hall Gymnasium which will be their last game of the semester.
