Hackettstown, PA - There are certain names that will remain linked together throughout history: Romeo and Juliet. Abbott and Costello. Ali-Frazier. Rocky and Bullwinkle. And when it comes to the budding Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball rivalry between Cedar Crest and Centenary, it will always be that Sunderhaus goes with Vasta.
Both Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin) and Jen Vasta were freshmen on their respective teams in 2008-09 when Cedar Crest pulled off a memorable 111-104 overtime victory at home over Centenary en route to the best season in school history. Vasta and the Cyclones returned the favor with a victory in Hackettstown soon after. But Cedar Crest won the rubber match in the CSAC playoffs, on Centenary's home court, ending their season in the process.
Although Centenary went on to sweep the series the past two years, it always seems that these two teams bring out the best in each other. Regardless of win-loss records or the type of seasons they may be having, when it comes to Cedar Crest versus Centenary, as your broker says, "Past performance is not indicative of future results."
Both players are now seniors and have gone on to storied careers, piling up accolades along the way. Among her many records, Sunderhaus became Cedar Crest's all-time leading scorer this season and has been increasing that mark with each passing game. On Wednesday night during the pregame, Vasta was honored for having now become Centenary's all-time leading scorer on Monday at Mount St. Vincent.
So it was fitting that the last meeting of these two CSAC titans should be an electrifying game: 14 ties and 10 lead changes, a 30-30 tie at the half, a monstrous 36-point, 25-rebound outing by Sunderhaus, 11 assists by Vasta, and a 79-75 Cedar Crest upset victory that came down to the last possession. The win avenged a 77-56 loss to Centenary just three weeks ago.
Sunderhaus dominated from start to finish, from scoring the game's first two points from the free throw line on an administrative technical foul before they even started the clock, to draining two late free throws to stretch the Falcons' lead to three with just :08 left. She had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the first half, 19 points and 14 boards in the second.
The Falcons struggled somewhat at the start, allowing the Cyclones to go up by as many as six points on several occasions before they finally regained the lead with just over six minutes until the half. The score see-sawed until the break, when the teams entered the locker room knotted at 30 each.
Centenary upped the defensive pressure in the second half, forcing a turnover and scoring twice right out of the chute. But each time the Cyclones threatened, Cedar Crest kept their cool and remained poised, slowly extending their lead once again. They led by as many as eight points with just 4:48 to go, then an Andrea Trucksess three-pointer, a block, a layup, a steal, and two free-throws in the next 45 seconds cut it back to one. It was that kind of game.
There were plenty of heroic plays and players - Sunderhaus was 3-3 from outside the arc, and a blistering 92.8% from the stripe (13-14). Amber Wehry (Klingerstown, PA/Tri-Valley Jr/Sr), after a slow first half, had 10 second-half points including a dramatic tip-in putback late in the half to put Cedar Crest up by six. DeJanet Lantion (Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy) had a huge, potentially game-saving offensive rebound and layup that put the Falcons up by five with just :25 remaining. The Cyclones hit three-pointers on each of their next two possessions but were forced to foul, and the Falcons hit all their free throws down the line to ice the win. Denyell Spingola (East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale-Ray) had 13 points, and a critical defensive rebound of a Centenary missed three-pointer that would have tied it at the :04 mark.
Cedar Crest was able to overcome 29 turnovers, and they out-rebounded Centenary 64 to 48.
Danielle Trucksess led the Cyclones with 25 points, and Andrea Innis had 19. Hannah Ally had 11 rebounds. Vasta finished with eight points, eight boards, and 11 assists.
Cedar Crest improves is now 6-15 on the season and 3-9 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Centenary drops to 14-7 and 7-5 in the CSAC. Next up, the Falcons will have their work cut out for them in a road game at Neumann University on Saturday, February 4th, at 1:00 PM.
