Box Score
Allentown, PA - Two teams out of CSAC playoff contention met to play for pride (and bragging rights) on Wednesday night as Keystone College visited Cedar Crest for the final game of the season. Keystone went home with the 81-67 win, but the Falcons had a few highlights of their own.
The game had several interesting subplots. The teams were wearing pink in support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's Play 4Kay initiative, which seeks to promote awareness and raise funds for the fight against breast cancer in memory of Coach Kay Yow. And the Falcons were without the services of senior Lizzy Sunderhaus (Hamilton, OH/Stephen T. Badin), who had a grad school commitment out of town, so this was, in a way, a preview of next season already.
If there was any question as to who would rise to the top to fill the hole left by the departure of Cedar Crest's all-time leading scorer and a top rebounder, one potential candidate answered loud and clear: Falcon sophomore Amber Wehry (Klingerstown, PA/Tri-Valley Jr/Sr), who led all scorers with a career-high 27 points and all rebounders with 14 boards.
The Giants jumped out to a six-point lead early on, which they held for most of the first half. As the minutes ticked down Keystone attempted to extend their lead, but Wehry had the hot hand and had back-to-back three-pointers to keep the Falcons close. At the 6:30 mark however, Cedar Crest began a bad stretch of turnovers and fouls that allowed the Giants to rattle off a 21-6 spurt to close the half up 47-25.
Although the Falcons outscored Keystone in the second half, it wasn't enough to overcome the 22-point first-half margin. On several occasions, they were able to cut the lead to 14, including on the last possession with a three-pointer by Megan DeMutis (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick Catholic), but that was as close as it would get. DeMutis finished with 14 points, and Denyell Spingola (East Haddam, CT/Nathan Hale-Ray) had 10. Freshman DeJanet Lantion (Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy) played particularly well with nine points and nine boards.
Keystone's Jazmyn Robinson led the Giants with 21 points, and Tiana Cuttino had 13 boards.
Cedar Crest finishes the season 7-18 overall and 4-12 in the CSAC. Keystone climbs to 11-14 and 8-8 in the conference.
