The Cedar Crest Field Hockey team traveled to Frederick, Maryland to play the Hood College Blazers. While fans may have had to bundle up from the game day windy weather, the Falcons brought their own heat by dominating the game with a new offensive plan. Last year's win over Hood College put a fire in the hearts of the Cedar Crest Falcons to get their first win of the season. Though try as they might, the Falcons fell to the Blazers 2-7 in a well played contest.
The Falcons were the first to find the back of the cage when sophomore Emily Rodenberger (Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen) scored off of an incoming free hit in the 5th minute of the game. The sudden strike of the Falcons went unanswered until the Blazers seized an opportunity to score in the 22nd minute of play. With another goal by Hood College, the first half would end 1-2 in favor of the Blazers.
The Falcons had eight penalty corners in their favor during the first 15 minutes of the second half when sophomore Jessica Sanbeg (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) scored off of a rebound shot. When asked about the new offensive plan, Sanbeg commented "I feel more flow on the field. There was always a lot of support [from teammates] when I had the ball." Fans were able to see great ball handling from the team as a whole with spectacular tackles that lead to caused turnovers for the Falcons.
With a goal apiece for Rodenberger and Sanbeg, sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Bredlinger was out-saved by one with 12 saves at the game's end.
Sophomore Viviana Samite commented that the new line of attack "works well for the team that we have", later commenting that she would like to use it again when appropriate. Cedar Crest drops to 0-7 overall without yet having played a conference game and Hood College improves 3-5. Up next, the Falcons will play a non-conference game under the lights against the Monarchs of King's College on Thursday, September 29th at 7:00 pm.
