Basketball Honors Seniors, Down Cairn

Looking to make it two in a row, the Cedar Crest College Basketball team welcomed CSAC opponent Cairn University.  On Wednesday night the Falcons earned their third CSAC win of the season in exciting fashion downing Baptist Bible 57-48.  In that game, the Falcons bench would add 20 points which would result in the hard fought conference victory.

Coming into today's game, senior's Breonna Lewis (Abingdon, MD/Sovereign Grace Homeschool) and DeJanet Lantion (Silver Spring, MD/John F. Kennedy) were averaging 11.8 and 8.1 points respectively.  Before today's game, head Basketball Coach Ty Taylor would honor those two seniors with a special ceremony before tonight's contest.  Lewis, who has averaged over 10 points per game over the past two years while Lantion who has committed four years of service to the Falcons basketball team.  "I will miss both of them" speaking of Lantion and Lewis said Coach Taylor.  "They have been important parts of our team and will be sincerely missed".  The Falcons would open up the first half on a 9-2 run in the first six minutes taking advantage of Highlander turnovers and fast break opportunities.  In the first eight minutes the Falcons would force nine Highlander turnovers while committing just three.  The remainder of the first half would be all Falcons would go on a 17-12 run to close out the first half.  Individually for the Falcons, Lewis and Meghan Gregory (Buckhorn, NM/Cliff High School) would both finish the first half with six points each while sophomore guard Taylor Osley (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff High School) would add five.  Lantion, Kayleigh Keggan (Blairstown, NJ/Belvidere) and freshman Victoria Eppright (Drexel Hill, PA/Delaware County Christian) would round out the first half scoring for the Falcons adding five three and two points respectively.  As a team the Falcons shot 35 % from the field while not missing from the free throw line.  The team finished with eight points in the pain, six points off of turnovers and two second chance points for the first 20 minutes.  The team would also add 10 first half steals led by Lantion's four.

To open the second half, the Falcons would go on a 13-7 run in the first six minutes to push the lead to 39-21.  Turnovers would continue to plague the Highlanders as the Falcons continued to push the pace collecting several steals throughout those first six minutes.  As the half went on, the Falcons continued to pressure the Highlanders and push the lead to 17 with eleven minutes left in the game.  Big plays by Shemeca Thompson (Bridgeport, CT/Warren Harding) and Miranda Schaeffer (Newport, PA/Newport) would supplement that lead.  The Falcons continued their domination throughout the second half and would claim the easy win beating Cairn 58-40. 

For the game two Falcons would finish with double digit points led by Breonna Lewis (Abingdon, MD/Sovereign Grace Homeschool)'s 13 and Taylor Osley (Allentown, PA/Louis E. Dieruff High School)'s 12.  On the boards, Meghan Gregory (Buckhorn, NM/Cliff High School) and Shemeca Thompson (Bridgeport, CT/Warren Harding) would both finish with nine rebounds apiece, pacing the Falcons to 45 total boards.  As a team the Falcons shot 30 % from the field and 70 % from the free throw line.  They would add 16 points in the paint, 14 points off of turnovers and four second chance points.  The bench would once again be the difference maker collecting 18 points.  The win vaults the Falcons overall record to 5-15 overall and 4-8 in the CSAC.  The Falcons will wrap up this week welcoming CSAC leading Cabrini College to campus on Saturday afternoon with game time scheduled for 1 pm in Lees Gymnasium.
