BRYN MAWR, Pa.---The Cedar Crest College basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with an exciting late fourth quarter win 51-48 over non-conference Bryn Mawr College on Tuesday afternoon.
In the first quarter the Falcons trailed early on, but brought the game within one point with four minutes left to play. The team began the second quarter five points behind, 15-10, but would match the Owls 12 points in the quarter to head into halftime with the score, 27-22.
Freshman guard/forward
Geminii Cabrera made back-to-back layups in the third quarter that allowed the Black and Yellow to take the lead for the first time in the game with five minutes left in the quarter.
The team trailed by seven heading into the fourth quarter but would take the lead again after going on a seven point run. Junior forward
Shemeca Thompson (Bridgeport, CT/Warren Harding) started the run with a layup, sophomore guard
Tenille Stewart (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) made a jump shot and followed up with two free throws.
Cabrera brought the team within one point with a jump shot.
The teams traded points for the next few minutes before
Stewart hit two free throws to tie and take the lead. Free throws helped the Falcons take the lead as freshman guard
Sylera Weller (Lancaster, Pa./J.P . McCaskey) knocked down one while
Stewart hit two more foul shots for the 51-48 win.
The next game for Cedar Crest is on Saturday, November 19 as the team travels to non-conference Medgar Evers with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m.
