Volleyball Tops Gwynedd Mercy

Box Score GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. ---The Cedar Crest College volleyball team improved to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in the  Colonial States Athletic Conference after defeating Gwynedd Mercy University, 3-2, on Wednesday evening by scores of, 22-25, 25-13, 25-16, 23-25 and 15-10.

After dropping the first set the Falcons rallied to win the next two sets. Cutting the deficit, and to take the lead in the second set which started on a rally when freshman outside hitter Kailey Elrod (Annville, Pa./Palmyra Area) earned a kill to win the serve back. Sophomore middle hitter Nicole Hill (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) added two service aces while Elrod had another kill, and a block assist with freshman middle hitter Elyse Podgurski (Randolph, N.J./Randolph). Freshman setter Devyn Crowder (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) added a kill to the rally advancing the team to a 9-7 lead. The team went on another eight point run going up, 23-10, capitalizing on Griffins errors as freshman defensive specialist Tiffany Hoppes (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) notched two service aces as the Falcons won 25-13.

In the third set, things tied at 4-4, the Black and Yellow went on a 10 point rally. Five of those points were on service aces by Crowder while Hill and senior middle hitter Molly Schnaubelt (San Diego, CA/University City) both added a kill. Home team brought it back within four points when two kills from Elrod extended the lead again. The final five points were a combination of errors, kills from Schnaubelt and Crowder, and the final point being a service ace from Hoppes. Unfortunately, the Falcons dropped the next set pushing the match into the fifth set.

First to 15 wins, Cedar Crest goes up by four, with a block and kill from Hill, a kill by Schnaubelt and a service ace by Crowder the team is up, 5-1. Tie game, 5-5, Hill spikes down a kill to earn the serve back. Schnaubelt adds two service aces while Elrod gets a kill, Falcons up 11-5. Sophomore setter/right side hitter Steph Barr (Unionville, CT/Sport and Medical Sciences Academy) sets up Podgurski, kill, one point away. Elrod with the serve, and she places it perfectly for the ace, Falcons win 15-10.

The next game for volleyball team is on Saturday, October 14 at 1:00 p.m. against non-conference Lehman College.
