Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey win thriller over Notre Dame in Shootout

BALTIMORE, Md. --- The Cedar Crest Field Hockey team took down the Gators from Notre Dame of Maryland, 3-2 in a shootout at Alumnae Field Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons, now 3-6 this season, are now 2-1 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) competition. Getting the Black and Yellow on the board early was freshman Deserea Dayton (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) for her second goal of the season just eight minutes into the game. That would be the only shot to get past a goalkeeper in the opening half.

In the second half, Notre Dame would get the equalizer in the 40th minute, then the 46th minute to take the lead, 2-1. Sophomore Brice Gardner (Gardners, Pa./Biglerville ) scored her second of the season off of a penalty stroke with just 2:44 remaining in regulation when the Falcons tied the game back up and head into overtime.

Both teams had scoring chances in the first over time but the game remained tied at two into second ever time period. With 40 seconds left in the second overtime period, a Gator streaked down the field but couldn't find the back of the cage and that sent the game to a shootout.

The Gators scored first but junior Madison Bowen ( Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area Senior) would make score to tie the shootout before junior Alexx Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Mechanicsburg Area) scored on her attempt to give the Falcons the 3-2 victory.

Junior Goalkeeper Cassandra Reijgers (Hollis, N.H./Hollis Brookline) recorded 12 saves on the 14 shots she faced. Reijgers would earn the win in the game, putting her record at 3-4 on the year.

Cedar Crest returns to action on Monday, October 8, when they travel to Bryn Athyn to finish the suspended game that was halted at the start of the second half, with the Falcons leading 3-1. The game will resume at 5:00 PM.
