Marone’s 4th-quarter goal lifts Falcons past Neumann in 4-3 victory

ASTON, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Field Hockey team took down Neumann University, 4-3, on the road on Wednesday evening. The Falcons improve to 3-7 after the victory, and will begin Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action over the weekend.

The non-conference game started off with a scoreless first quarter, but the Black and Yellow did take five shots, with three of them going on goal, to the Knights' one shot. The Falcons would strike first in the second quarter, with a goal coming from sophomore Serena Shuler (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) in the 17th minute, her third of the season. Neumann would tie it back up in the 22nd minute but freshman Amber Cieri (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) would get a shot past the keeper for her second goal of the season, with an assist being credited to junior Brice Gardner (Gardners, Pa./Biglerville ). That goal in the 25th minute would be the last of the half, with Cedar Crest leading 2-1.

Coming out of halftime, the Knights went right to work and scored to knot the game at 2-2 in the 33rd minute. Shuler scored her second goal of the game and fourth on the year two minutes later in the 34th minute to regain the lead. Neumann would find the equalizer for the third time in the game, coming in the 49th minute and just four minutes into the fourth quarter. In the 55th minute, Cedar Crest would take the lead for the fourth and final time, as freshman Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead. Cedar Crest was able to keep the Knights out of the back of the cage and defeated Neumann 4-3.

The Falcons blasted 22 shots in the game to outshoot Neumann 22-8, with Cedar Crest doubling the amount of shots on goal at 14-7. The Black and Yellow dominated in Penalty Corners, earning 15 in the win, compared to the two that the Knights were given.

Senior Goalkeeper, Cassandra Reijgers (Hollis, N.H./Hollis Brookline), got the start in the game and made four saves on seven shots. Reijgers earned the victory and her recorded improved to 2-6.

The Falcons will open CSAC play this weekend when they travel to Baltimore on Saturday, October 5 to take on Notre Dame of Maryland. First whistle is slated for 1:00 PM on Alumnae Field.
