ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College Soccer team took down Centenary University for the first time in 11 years in their 2-1 victory at the FalconPlex on Tuesday evening. The Falcons improve to 7-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and 11-4 overall after defeating the reigning CSAC Champion Cyclones.
"Tonight was a total team win and every single person on this team contributed," commented Head Coach
Sarah Wolcott. "We were engaged and committed to winning every moment of the game and our energy level was high from start to finish."
The Falcons and Cyclones played a scoreless first half, but each squad had multiple opportunities. The Black and Yellow took 7 first-half shots, with three shots that went on the keeper. Centenary would take four shots in the first 45-minute half, with only that went on goal and needed a save. The one opportunity that Centenary was unable to capitalize on was when a Cyclone blasted a shot on goal that was saved, and a rebound shot bounced off the left-side post. Both squads would head into the half at 0-0.
The second half was similar for the Falcons, attempting seven more shots with three shots going on goal, but this time, the Black and Yellow would find the back of the net. Just six minutes into the second half, junior defender,
Kara Brownlie (Southampton, Pa./Abington Friends School) stopped a clearance and blasted a shot on goal from over 25-yards out to get over the keeper's hand to gain a 1-0 advantage.
Brownlie's goal was her second career goal as a Falcon and her second of the season in the 51st minute. About three minutes later, Centenary would find the equalizer, with a Cyclone receiving a pass across the 18-yard box that she put in the bottom-left side of the net to tie the game at 1-1 in the 53rd minute.
20 minutes later, senior
Kimberly Rosano (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) would regain the Falcons lead for good after scoring a goal that was assisted by sophomore
Kaitlyn Kozdron (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) in the 73rd minute. Senior
Kelsey Kehm (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) took a corner kick and played it short to
Kozdron, who would beat two defenders, and drive a low-hard pass through the box to
Rosano, who would get a foot on it to beat the Cyclones keeper. The score would hold for the duration of the half, giving the Falcons the 2-1 victory.
Coach Wolcott continued, "We did a great job of staying composed and keeping possession in some interesting weather. We didn't let the weather faze us and the rain seems to be our forte. We did the little things well and made big things happen."
Freshman goalkeeper,
Lauren Makely (Lake Grove/Sachem North), started her 15th game of the year, and faced six shots in the match, making two saves and allowed just one goal.
Makely improved the 11-4 after receiving the win in the decision.
Tonight was the first time this season that Centenary allowed a goal in Conference play, and the first time since October 21, 2017. The Falcons also handed the Cyclones their first loss in the CSAC since September of 2017 and their first conference road-loss since October of 2016.
"I'm so proud of how hard everyone worked and stayed tuned in for a full 90 minutes. We wanted this win and we proved we deserved it," concluded
Coach Wolcott.
The Falcons will hit the road for their final road game of the regular season, when they travel to Clarks Summit University for a CSAC game on Saturday, October 26. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM on the Defenders Soccer field.
