Soccer clinches #1 seed in CSAC Playoffs after 1-1 draw with Cairn

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Soccer squad ended the regular season with a 1-1 tie with Cairn University on Thursday evening, clinching the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) regular season title and the top-spot in the CSAC Playoffs after the decision.

"We had a lot of opportunities, but couldn't quite finish them, and that's the way the ball rolls sometimes," stated Head Coach Sarah Wolcott. "But we got the job done. We had a stumble, but we buckled down and our focus and determination pushed us through."

The Falcons conclude their regular season with an overall record of 12-4-1 and finish unbeaten in conference play with a record 8-0-1.

Cedar Crest dominated the statistical charts, blasting 21 shots in the game, with eight shots on goal, compared to the Highlanders four shots and three on target. The Black and Yellow earned nine corner kicks in the contest, with six coming in regulation and three in the second overtime.

All the scoring took place in the first 10 minutes of the game, with Cairn taking a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. The Falcons responded just two minutes later after there was a foul against Cairn in the 18-yard box that gave Cedar Crest a penalty kick. Junior Adrianna Tennis (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) stepped up and shot to the bottom right of the goal and tied the game in the 10th minute at 1-1. Cedar Crest would take nine shots in each half of regulation, with five going on the Highlanders keeper, and took two more shots on goal in the second overtime period, but was unable to get one past the goalie.

"I'm really proud of how we responded and continued to raise our level through the match," continued Coach Wolcott. "I really think if we had just a couple more minutes we would have found the back of the net. But, like I said, that's how it goes."

Freshman goalkeeper, Lauren Makely (Lake Grove/Sachem North), recorded two saves this evening in the 17th start of her rookie campaign. She stopped one shot in the second half and the other in the first overtime. Makely improved her record to match the team's at 12-4-1.

"We got the job done tonight, now we're resetting and focusing on the CSAC tournament," concluded Coach Wolcott.

Cedar Crest will wait and see who they will host, as the #5-seed Rosemont College travels to #4-seed Notre Dame of Maryland University in Baltimore, Maryland on Monday, November 4. The winner of that game will come to Allentown on Wednesday, November 6 at a time to be determined. Stayed tuned to cedarcrestathletics.com for more information.
