ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Tennis program had its win-streak halted with a 4-5 loss to Rosemont College in the final match of the regular season on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons end the regular season with an overall record of 7-5 and suffered their first Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) loss of the season, falling to 5-1.
Starting with doubles action, the Falcons would take the first lead of the match was
Andrea Abdale (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast ) and
Chelsea Tito (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. DuPont) at the second flight, with an (8-3) victory. The duo of
Mercedes Melo (Lehighton, Pa./Palmerton Area) and
Alyssa Epsaro (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) would claim first-doubles (9-7) to extend their lead to 2-0. The Black and Yellow would drop the final flight of doubles-action, which consisted of
Katherine Naples (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North) and
Ashley Wilkins (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding), who needed a tie-breaker to settle the match, falling (8-9) in a (9-11) tie-breaker. The Falcons would possess a 2-1 lead heading into singles-play.
Cedar Crest would push their lead to 3-1 after
Tito would earn her point at fifth-singles, (6-0, 6-1).
Epsaro would fall in the second flight, (1-6, 3-6) to cut the lead back to one, but
Maya Narasimhan (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains Fanwood) won her point at third-singles to put the score at 4-2.
Abdale at fourth-singles would drop her match (2-6, 2-6) as the Ravens crept closer to tying the match. Both first and sixth-singles would require third sets, starting with
Melo and her opponent at first-singles, where
Melo fell short of claiming her point. Rosemont tied the match and the winner at sixth-singles would give their team the victory.
Telena Jones (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and her Raven opponent would go three sets and then-some, as
Jones claimed set one, but would drop set two and three, falling (6-4, 4-6, 6-7) with the final set ending with a (9-11) tie-breaker that gave Rosemont the 5-4 win.
Despite the loss, Cedar Crest will be the #1 seed in the CSAC Playoffs this year and be the host of the 2019 CSAC Tennis Playoffs at the Legacy Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia. The tournament will begin on Saturday, April 27 with the Falcons competing in Match 1 versus Bryn Athyn College at 9:30 AM. Match 2 will take place an hour after the conclusion of Match 1 and will consist of Cairn University and Rosemont College. The CSAC Championship Match is currently scheduled for Sunday, April 28 at 12:00 PM.
