Soccer opens 2019 campaign with 3-2 victory over John Jay College

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Soccer program defeated John Jay College 3-2 to earn their first win of the 2019 season on their home turf on Friday evening.

"We showed a lot of heart and a lot of guts tonight and we had so many players step up," commented Head Coach Sarah Wolcott. "The ball didn't always roll our way, but we found a way to win."

The Falcons found themselves in a hole after John Jay netted the first goal just 20 seconds into the match off of a Penalty Kick. The Black and Yellow then found the equalizer in the ninth minute off of the foot of junior Adrianna Tennis (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) with the assist coming from Erika D'Angelo (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial). That would be all the scoring that took place in the first half, but in the 57th minute, Tennis would find the back of the net once again off of a long shot outside of the 18-yard box that got passed the keeper. Under ten minutes later, the Bloodhounds would bring the match back to a tie off of another penalty kick that put the game at 2-2 in the 65th minute. The final goal of the game was a Hat Trick goal for Tennis that gave the Falcons the lead for good in the 78th minute as Cedar Crest would hold on for the 3-2 victory.

Adrianna showed her leadership on the field and came through for us in a big way," stated Coach Wolcott."Freshman Taylor Wolf (Towsend, De./Middletown) came in and made a huge impact for us in the midfield," continued Wolcott, "she gave us a spark that propelled us into that win."

Cedar Crest was out-shot 8-14 in the contest, with five their shots going on the keeper as the Bloodhounds had 10 shots on goal. The Black and Yellow earned three corner kicks in the win to John Jay's one that came in the first half. Starting in her first-collegiate game was freshman goalkeeper Lauren Makely (Lake Grove/Sachem North), who recorded eight saves on the 10 shots she faced. Makely received the win in contest giving her the first college victory.

"Overall, we preserved down the stretch and got the result. I'm really proud of the fight we put up tonight, this was a great preview of our tenacious attitude, and the best is yet to come, concluded Wolcott.

The Falcons will return to action Labor Day, Monday, September 2 when Cedar Crest hosts Medaille College in a non-conference match with a late morning match beginning at 11:00 AM.
