Soccer tallies two in non-conference loss to NJCU

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College Soccer squad had two Falcons scored two second-half goals, but fell short in comeback as the New Jersey City University (NJCU) Gothic Knights defeated the Falcons 5-2 on the FalconPlex Wednesday evening.

"That was a tough one," commented Head Coach Sarah Wolcott. "We worked really hard collectively, and unfortunately the score doesn't reflect that."

The Falcons, now (3-2) on the year, dropped a non-conference game to the NJCU after the Gothic Knights struck first in the 22nd minute to a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Falcons would answer with one of their own in the 47th, with a goal scored by junior Adrianna Tennis (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove), her seventh goal of the season, that was assisted by junior Kara Brownlie (Southampton, Pa./Abington Friends School) off of a free kick. Just over a minute later, NJCU would regain the lead in the 48th minute. Junior Daria Warner (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) would score her fifth goal of the season after Tennis played a ball to her to beat the keeper. After that, the Gothic Knights would score three unanswered goals that would put the game at its final score, 5-2.

Both teams shot in double-digits, with Cedar Crest being outshot 16-11, but the shots on goal were within one shot, with NJCU taking nine to the Falcons eight. The Black and Yellow did earn more corner kicks in the contest, 5-2.

Freshman goalkeeper, Lauren Makely (Lake Grove/Sachem North), recorded four saves of the nine shots on goal. Makely was handed the loss in the decision and her record also falls to (3-2).

Coach Wolcott concluded with, "We know what we need to work on, and we are going to use this as a learning opportunity. We're just getting refocused and ready for our game on Saturday."

Cedar Crest will travel to Mahwah, New Jersey this weekend for a non-conference game versus Ramapo College on Saturday, September 14. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM and links for coverage will be provided on our website.
