Box Score AURORA, NY. --- The Cedar Crest Field Hockey team won its first game of the 2019 season, 9-0 over Wells College, giving Head Coach Kellina Yarrish her first win back as the falcons head coach.
"I am proud of the way the girls played today. We played strong from start to finish" Head Coach Kellina Yarrish stated in the Falcon's 9-0 victorious performance on the road today.
The Falcons scored five goals in the first quarter, starting strong right off the bat. The first one coming off the stick of sophomore Samantha Johnson (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) only 50 seconds into the game, netting her second goal of the season. Freshman Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) finessed her way in the circle twice right after, with two back-to-back goals. Next two goals of the quarter coming from Junior Alexandra Arabio (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor ) both off of beautiful crossing passes through the circle from senior Makenzie Kistler (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton) and the other from senior Jennie Fritz (Walnutport, Pa./Northern Lehigh). The Falcons entered the second quarter with Jennie Fritz's (Walnutport, Pa./Northern Lehigh) hustle to scoring two back-to-back goals, both being three minutes apart from each other. To end the first half, sophomore Samantha Johnson (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) would strike again with a quick give and go pass from teammate freshmen Olivia Wright (Riverside, N.J./Riverside). Cedar Crest would add one more goal in the second half from senior Makenzie Kistler (Walnutport, Pa./Northampton) putting the shot past the goalkeeper off a pass from fellow senior Jennie Fritz (Walnutport, Pa./Northern Lehigh).
The Falcons would outshoot the Express 18-10, with 14 of Cedar Crest shots on cage to the 7 from Wells. Corners were few and scarce from both teams, falcons only having 6 and the Express having 4.
Senior Goalkeeper Emma Ryan (Sterling, Va./Park View) (Sterling, Va.) and Freshmen Jackie Valadez (San Diego, Calif./Mira Mesa High) both split time between the pipes. Ryan was only tested once making a clean save and clear out, while Valadez was tested multiple times making 7 saves to keep Wells off the board. Valadez was also tested with a stroke during the third quarter, coming up with a huge save for the falcons in her first collegiate appearance and win.
"We've been working hard to put big improvements into our game play and it was nice to see it come together today" added Head Coach Yarrish.
The Falcons are back into action tomorrow as they travel to SUNY Brockport on Sunday, September 15, when they face the Golden Eagles in a non-conference matchup at 12:00 PM.
