Soccer suffers double overtime loss to Bryn Mawr

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest Soccer team dropped their first contest of the 2019 season to Bryn Mawr College in double overtime on Friday evening.

"That was a tough one," commented Head Coach Sarah Wolcott. "We knew it was going to be a hard fought match. Bryn Mawr always brings their A game, and they surely did that today."

The Falcons fall to 2-1 on the season, after a close contested battle with the Owls on the FalconPlex. Bryn Mawr got on the board first, but the Black and Yellow responded with a goal of their own from junior Daria Warner (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), her fourth of the season, to tie the game at 1-1. Sophomore Brittney Dunleavy (Auburn, Pa./Blue Mountain) netted her second goal of the season and second goal of the game for Cedar Crest in the 37th minute to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Bryn Mawr would find the equalizer in the 63rd minute to knot the game at 2-2 which is how the score would remain after regulation and the first 10-minute overtime. In the second overtime, with just 40-seconds left on the clock, the Owls would score the game-ender to defeat the Falcons, 3-2.

"We gutted out 109:15," continued Coach Wolcott, "and, unfortunately, in soccer it only takes one lapse, one mistake for a good team to make you pay, and that's what happened."

The Falcons were outshot 22-13 in the match, with Bryn Mawr taking seven shots on goal compared to the five the Cedar Crest took. The Black and Yellow were able to earn more corner kicks in the contest, taking 12 to the Owls seven.

Freshman goalkeeper, Lauren Makely (Lake Grove/Sachem North) faced seven shots in the match, making four saves for the Falcons. Makely played all 109+ minutes and ultimately received the loss in the decision, putting her record the same as the squad, 2-1.

"This was a really good test for us. I'm proud of how hard we fought, and I think our players will use this match to fuel them forward," concluded Coach Wolcott.

The Falcons will hit the road for the first time this season, when they travel to Wells College in Aurora, New York for a non-conference match on Sunday, September 8. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
