ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College Basketball program (3-14, 2-8 CSAC) played in a closely-contested contest with the Notre Dame of Maryland University (11-5, 8-2 CSAC) in Lees Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons suffered a 55-61 loss at the hands of the Gators.
Cedar Crest trailed the Gators by 10 points at the halfway point of the first quarter, before cutting the deficit to four points at the end of the quarter, trailing 9-13. Notre Dame would extend their lead back up to 10 points, before a strong effort to close out the half led to the Black and Yellow being down by just four points heading into halftime, 24-28.
The Falcons erupted in the third quarter, scoring 21 points and battled to take the lead on several occasions, which gave Cedar Crest a 45-44 lead after three quarters of play. The Black and Yellow would push their lead up to eight points with over seven minutes to play, but that's when the Gators began to put pressure on the Falcons. Notre Dame tied the ballgame at 52-52 with three minutes remaining and took the lead a possession later, which they would hold the rest of the contest, as the Falcons fell, 55-61.
Two Falcons ended the game in double-figures, freshman
Kelly Reid (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) posted back-to-back double-digit performances, recording 15 points and five rebounds, while senior
Geminii Cabrera (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) tallied 14 and five boards.
Reid also added an assist while
Cabrera dished out a team-high five assists and a steal.
Freshman
Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) finished the afternoon with a team-high nine rebounds and nine points, with four assist, two steals and a blocked shot. Senior
Venus Cabrera (Reading,Pa./Berks Catholic) scored seven points, four boards, an assist and a steal while sophomore
Tiesha Fortune-Saunders (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) went 2-2 from the floor with a three-pointer for her five points and five boards. Freshman
Megan Peifer (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) hit a three for her three points in the game to go with four rebounds and an assist as junior
Mackenzie Borger (Kresgeville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) finished the contest with three rebounds and an assist.
The Falcons hit the road for three-consecutive games, starting with a trip to Bryn Athyn College (4-13, 3-7 CSAC) on Wednesday, January 29. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 PM in Asplundh Field House.
