LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College Basketball team (5-14, 4-8 CSAC) defeated Cairn University (1-19, 1-10 CSAC) 72-56 in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) on a milestone day for the Falcons basketball program on Saturday afternoon.
With the first basket of the game, senior
Geminii Cabrera (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) became the 11th member of Cedar Crest College to reach 1,000 points in a career.
Cabrera is the first to wear the Black and Yellow to record this honor since Angela Ensley did in 2014.
The Falcons scored the first four points, including
Cabrera's 1,000
th point, before the Highlanders recorded their first basket. Cedar Crest extended their lead to 11 points late in the first quarter before Cairn hit a layup to put the score at 19-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Black and Yellow reached their largest lead of the first half, 12 points, on two separate occasions, but the Highlanders cut into the deficit to seven-points before the Falcons sunk a basket with three seconds left to take a double-digit lead into halftime, 38-27.
Cedar Crest ballooned their lead to over 20 points in the third quarter and for second-straight quarter, the Falcons scored a layup in the final seconds to extend their lead to 22 points, 61-39. Cairn outscored Cedar Crest 11-17 in the final 10 minutes of the game, but the Falcons kept their double-figure lead to close out the game, 72-56.
Two Falcons put together 20+ point performances in the game, coming from freshman
Ashley Wilson (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and senior
Geminii Cabrera (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic).
Wilson netted 25 points, going 9-15 (60%), and went 4-10 (40%) from long distance, to go with six rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks.
Cabrera, as mentioned before, eclipsed the 1,000 point mark, scoring 20 points in the game and a team-high six assists, two rebounds and a blocked shot.
Freshman
Kelly Reid (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) sunk two three-pointers and a layup for her eight points as graduate student
Meghan Gregory (Buckhorn, NM/Cliff) was 2-2 from the field and 2-2 from the foul line for six points in the game. Freshman
Megan Peifer (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) recorded five points and five rebounds as sophomore
Amiyah Peters (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) and junior
Mackenzie Borger (Kresgeville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) each scored three points. Senior
Venus Cabrera (Reading,Pa./Berks Catholic) rounded out the scorers column, netting two points. Sophomores Tiesha and
Tinesha Fortune-Saunders (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) both brought down rebounds for the Black and Yellow, Tinesha brought down five boards and Tiesha recorded three rebounds.
The Falcons conclude their three-game road trip on Wednesday, February 5 when they travel to Keystone College (14-5, 12-0 CSAC) for a CSAC competition. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM in Ace Spalding Arena in the Gambal Athletic Center.
