NORTH MYRTLE BRACH, SC – The Cedar Crest College Softball team (1-2) earned their first win of the 2020 season with a 10-9 victory over Rivier University in extra innings, after suffering a 1-15 loss in five innings to Castleton University at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex on Monday.
Game 1:
The Falcons got on the scoreboard first, with a sacrifice fly by
Dallas Horning (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty), scoring
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy), but Castleton would pour on five runs in the first to put the Black and Yellow behind 1-5. The Spartans had one cross in the second and had scored the rest of their runs in the bottom of the third inning, putting the game at its final score of 1-15.
Cedar Crest was credited with five total hits, coming from two Falcons. Sophomore
Delaney VanBuskirk (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) went 2-for-3 and freshman
Rachel Savini (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) went 3-for-3 and also scored a run for the Black and Yellow.
Savini had all extra base hits, recording a triple and two doubles for the Falcons as senior
Dallas Horning (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty) drove in the lone Falcon run.
Two pitchers were in the circle for the Black and Yellow, getting the start was sophomore
Skyler Bilous (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland), who faced 16 batters in two innings of work. Senior
Breanna Young (Easton, PA /Wilson Area) entered in relief, also faced 16 batters in 2.0 innings pitched.
Game 2:
After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Raiders, but Rivier tied up the contest in the top half of the third, 2-2. The Raiders tacked on another run in the third, before their tallied five more runs in the top of the sixth, as the Falcons trailed 2-8. Cedar Crest would not give up easily, countering with six runs of their own to knot up the contest 8-8 after six, which led to the game to need an extra inning. Rivier had one runner cross the plate in the top of the 8th, 8-9, but Cedar Crest would walk it off in the bottom half of the eighth with a single by freshman
Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) to lead the Falcons to their first win of the year, 10-9.
Cedar Crest had 16 hits in game 2, as two Falcons each recorded three-hit performances. Senior
Nicole Santaniello (Kissimmee, Fl./Osceola) finished 3-for-5 and scored three times as freshman
Renee Snyder (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) put together a 3-for-4 day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Three other members of the Black and Yellow had two hits in the contest, both
Horning and
VanBuskirk went 2-for-5 and drove in a run as freshman Riley Mateljan made her debut for the Falcons, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and scored twice.
Four other Falcons each recorded a hit in the contest, junior
Riley Tremblay (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) went 1-for-5 with a run scored.
Savini also went 1-for-5 this time around as junior
Patricia Dalton (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) posted a 1-for-4 game. Junior
Danielle Krispin (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) went 1-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs for the Black and Yellow.
Making her first start in the circle was senior
Kendra Pekurny (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton Area), facing 32 batters in 5.1 innings of work. Entering the game in relief was
Bilous, who faced 11 batters in 2.2 innings pitched, earning a win for the Black and Yellow.
Cedar Crest returns to action tomorrow morning, Tuesday,, March 3 for a doubleheader of games on Field #2 at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex. Game 1 of the day is set for 9:30 AM against Wilkes University, followed by a game versus Wesley College, to start approximately at 11:30 AM.
