ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Amber Cieri (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) tallied a hat trick to lead the Cedar Crest College field hockey team doubled up Sweet Briar College, 4-2, in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play on Friday night at the FalconPlex.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cieri put the Falcons on the scoreboard in the 22
nd minute. Just over five minutes later, freshman
Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) set up junior
Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) for her 10
th goal of the season to give Cedar Crest a 2-0 advantage.
The Vixens cut its deficit to one in the 30
th minute on a marker from Lara Jost to make the score 2-1 at the half.
Cieri registered her second goal of the night in the 38
th minute to put the Falcons up 3-1. She maneuvered around a few Sweet Briar defenders. The Vixens' senior goalkeeper Janie Bolling (Hereford, Md.) came out of the cage to break up the initial attempt, but Cieri was able to gather the loose ball and shoot on an open net to record her seventh goal of the season.
Sweet Briar trimmed the Falcon lead to one, 3-2, in the 51
st minute when sophomore Avery Jones (Union, Conn.) sent a pass in front of the cage off a corner and freshman Kailey McCarthy (Atkinson, N.H.) finished the attempt for her third marker of the season.
Cieri capped the scoring and the hat trick with 20 seconds left when she netted the goal off a corner from Marone as the contest ended in the 4-2 final.
The teams were even in shots at 12 apiece and had an equal number of corners with 10.
Cedar Crest freshman goalkeeper
Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) was credited with the win in the cage, converting three saves. Bolling was tagged with the loss and made six stops for the Vixens.
Cedar Crest (5-7 overall, 3-2 CSAC) will return to action on Tuesday, October 19 for a non-conference contest at Drew University. The game time is slated for 7:00 p.m. Sweet Briar (8-5 overall, 3-2 CSAC) will have a quick turnaround with a contest at Wells College on Saturday, October 16 at 11:00 a.m.
