Soccer Breezes Past Saint Elizabeth

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Cedar Crest College soccer team returned to the win column with a 9-0 victory over Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play.

"This was a solid team effort to get us back on a winning track," said Interim Head Coach Sam Busillo. "We did a good job of winning every ball first and executing an effective plan of attack. We had some new players step up and find the back of the net, giving us a nice variation in goal scoring. We are looking forward to using this momentum to find continued success."

Nine different Falcons recorded a goal in the contest, with graduate student Erika D'Angelo (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) leading the way with a goal and an assist.

Cedar Crest scored six goals in the opening half and led 6-0 at the break. Freshman MacKayla Reed (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area Senior) kicked things off with a goal in the 17th minute. The Falcons then netted five goals over an 11-minute span to close the first half. Graduate student Adrianna Tennis (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) sunk a penalty kick to increase the lead to 2-0. Freshmen Abril Riley (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and Rebecca Verdi (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) along with D'Angelo and senior Kaitlyn Kozdron (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township) tallied goals in the opening 45 minutes.

The Falcons tacked on three insurance goals to seal the victory. Freshman Kayla Reiter (Fogelsville, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), Aurora Odell (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane), and Linsey Nester (Mohrsville, Pa./Hamburg) recorded the second-half tallies for the 9-0 victory.

Junior Lauren Makely (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) converted two saves in goal for Cedar Crest. Saint Elizabeth senior goalkeeper Keturah Cohen (Orange, N.J.) made seven saves in the loss.

The Falcons outshot the Eagles 28-4 and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Cedar Crest (8-1-1 overall, 3-1-0 CSAC) remains on the road for a conference match at Cairn University on Wednesday, October 13 at 3:00 p.m. Saint Elizabeth (0-8 overall, 0-5 CSAC) will stay at home to host Valley Forge on Thursday, October 14 at 4:00 p.m.
