ROSEMONT, Pa. --- The Cedar Crest College tennis squad began their 2020-21 season with a, 5-4, road-win over Rosemont College in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. The Falcons improve to (1-0), as the Ravens fall to (0-2) overall and in conference action.
Rosemont had forfeited both third doubles and sixth singles, to give Cedar Crest a 2-0 lead prior to the start of the match.
Starting with doubles, Cedar Crest had freshmen Lily Spagnola (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) and Katherine Franzone () fell to Rosemont's pair at first doubles, (3-8), followed by a close match at second doubles that senior Ashley Wilkins (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) and freshman Isabel Sandone (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Township) dropped their bout, (6-8). After doubles action was complete, the Ravens and Falcons were tied up at 2-2, heading into singles play.
With sixth singles winning by default, the first Falcon to finish was freshman Sam Henson (Waterbury, Conn./W.F. Keynor Technical), where she claimed both sets (6-1, 6-0) for her first collegiate win wearing Black and Yellow. Wilkins was able to win her match at third singles, winning the first set in a tiebreaker (7-6 (7-4)). Her opponent would retire from the match in the second set, giving Wilkins the win and putting the Falcons up 4-2.
Cedar Crest would clinch the match-win when senior Katherine Naples (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire North) defeated her opposition at fourth singles (6-3, 6-0) giving the Falcons a 5-2 lead. Rosemont continued to fight, as both Spagnola and Franzone dropped both of their matches. Spagnola lost at second singles (6-4, 3-6, 6-10) and Franzone fell at first singles (3-6, 3-6), putting the match at its final score of 5-4.
