Field Hockey Holds Off Eastern Mennonite, 5-4

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team held off a late charge from Eastern Mennonite University for a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at the FalconPlex.

The Falcons got off to a quick start, shutting out the Royals in the first half, 3-0. Junior Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) added the first two goals in the opening five minutes. Both goals were assisted by freshman Lauren Jackson (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon).

Cedar Crest added another in the 23rd minute on a marker from freshman Ashley Large (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit) with the assist being credited to Jackson.

Eastern Mennonite got on the board in the in the 31st minute on a tally from freshman Morgan Leslie (Louisa, Va.) to make the score 3-1.

The Falcons answered back with two straight goals, one from Marone assisted by Large and the other being recorded by sophomore Mira Carver (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon). The Carver goal was assisted by junior Amber Cieri (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) as the score pushed to 5-1. The Royals found the back of the net one more time in the third quarter, this time on a marker from senior Skylar Hedgepeth (Smithfield, Va.) to make the score 5-2 at the end of the third quarter.

Eastern Mennonite closed the gap to one in the fourth quarter on goals separated by 34 seconds, the first being scored by Hedgepeth, with the helper going to sophomore Cassidy Armstrong (Culpepper, Va.). Leslie recorded the final goal of the contest, with the assist being credited to Hedgepeth, as the game ended in the eventual 5-4 final.

Freshman Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) registered the win in the cage for the Falcons, converting two saves in 40:05. Junior Ann Ghally (Aldie, Va.) was tagged with the loss for the Royals while recording six saves.

Cedar Crest held a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corners.

Cedar Crest (2-1 overall) closes out its season-long four-game homestand on Tuesday, September 14 against Misericordia University at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Mennonite (2-2 overall) returns home to host Hood on Wednesday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m.
