NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Cedar Crest College soccer team recorded its third straight win as it posted a 1-0 victory at John Jay College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at Randall's Island Stadium.
"That one was a real nail-biter," said Head Coach
Sarah Wolcott. "We could have used a million excuses to not win today. It was hot and we were tired, but even when things aren't going well good teams find a way to win. Today wasn't the best soccer we've ever played, but when push came to shove, we found a way to get the job done. This team is and has always been built on heart, and that showed today."
Graduate student
Adrianna Tennis (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) dribbled inside the box and scored with 49 seconds left in regulation to provide the lone goal of the match. Sophomore
Lauren Makely (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) made the margin stand up in goal, registering four saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
"Honestly, I think this kind of win defines a team," continued Wolcott. "It's character building, grit, and determination. When the cards were stacked against us, we found a way to rise above. We found a way to win, and I couldn't be more proud."
The Falcons outshot the Bloodhounds, 12-9, while John Jay had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Tennis, who was tabbed CSAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, now leads the conference with three game-winning goals on the season.
Cedar Crest (4-0-1 overall) starts conference play with its next game at home against Wilson College on Saturday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m.
