Soccer Sinks Wilson in Double Overtime to Start Conference Slate

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-1 victory over Wilson College in double overtime on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at the FalconPlex.

Freshman Rebecca Verdi (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) scored first for the Falcons, while the game winner was registered by graduate student Adrianna Tennis (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove). Tennis and junior Madison VanKirk (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) also recorded assists on the day as Cedar Crest improved to 5-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action.

After a scoreless first half, the Falcons got on the board in the 75th minute. After the ball was sent towards the endline, freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Marakovitz (New Market, Md.) came out of the net, virtually leaving an open cage for Cedar Crest. The ball was sent in front where Tennis sent a pass through the Phoenix defense and Verdi finished top-left corner for the goal.

Wilson tallied the equalizer in the 89th minute when freshman Chloe Antalek (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) connected a shot off a corner from junior Simone Karustis (Pottstown, Pa.), which found the back of the net to knot the game at one, eventually sending the contest to overtime.

The teams played a scoreless first overtime period, but Falcons didn't waste time in the second period of extra time to secure the win.

In the 101st minute, VanKirk set up Tennis outside the box for the game-winner. She settled the ball and fired the shot past Marakovitz for the winner.

Makely made two saves against three shots in the victory. Marakovitz converted nine saves in the setback.

Cedar Crest will next play at Centenary University on Wednesday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m.
