SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College field hockey team was defeated by Marywood University in a 7-1 final on Saturday afternoon at Pacers Field. The win improves the Pacers to 5-3 while the Falcons slip to 2-5.
Marywood scored in every quarter en route to the victory. Freshman Lauren Youngken (Stroudsburg, Pa.) started the scoring when she tapped in a shot off a save of a previous attempt. Youngken was back in the action in the 12
th minute when she crossed the ball in front of the cage and freshman Brianna Sumner (Union Beach, N.J.) connected on a shot attempt for a goal to make the score 2-0 at the end of one quarter.
The Pacers tacked on one each in the second and third quarter. Freshman Sara Thomas (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) found the back of the net, assisted by classmate Amanda Leeland (Lancaster, Pa.) in the 27th minute while freshman Milana Straub followed with a goal to push the score to 4-0 with one stanza to play.
Marywood added three straight goals in the fourth to stretch the score to 7-0. The Falcons would get on the board with 1:10 remaining in regulation on a marker by junior
Amber Cieri (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh), blasting the shot from 10 yards in front of the cage. The helper was awarded to classmate
Kiley Marone (Mohrsville, PA/Tulpehocken High School) as the game ended in the 7-1 final.
The Pacers outshot Cedar Crest, 31-8, and had a 17-2 advantage in corners.
Freshman goalkeeper
Brynn Rifino (Dover, Del./Smyrna) tallied 17 saves for the Falcons, while sophomore Rachel Yohn (Turbotville, Pa.) and freshman Gabriella Pimental (Moorpark, Calif.) saw time in the cage for Marywood. Yohn played the first 45 minutes and wasn't credited with a save. Pimentel registered two saves as she played the final quarter in goal for the Pacers.
Cedar Crest will stay on the road for its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opener at Keystone College on Wednesday, September 29 at 4:00 p.m. Marywood remains home to host Delaware Valley University on Tuesday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m.
