ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Cedar Crest College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at Lees Gymnasium. The Falcons picked up a straight-set over Rosemont College to start Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and then fell to Gallaudet University in four sets to close the day.
Match One – Cedar Crest 3, Rosemont 0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-15)
The Falcons held a comfortable margin in the first set, getting out to a five-point lead, 12-7, after a service error from junior Kara Green (Ridley, Pa.).
After a kill from first-year Faith Wilson (Gainesville, Fla.), Cedar Crest went on an 8-1 run to build a 20-8 advantage following a kill from junior
Maddison Minyo (Covington, Pa./North Penn-Mansfield). The Falcons won the first set 25-13 and grabbed the 1-0 lead.
Rosemont scored five of the first six points in the second set, but Cedar Crest rallied to tie the frame at 10. The Falcons concluded the set on an impressive run, outscoring the Ravens 15-3 to capture the set, 25-13.
Cedar Crest jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the third after a service ace by junior
Daja Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Gilbert ). The Ravens cut the margin to two, 15-13, but the Falcons used a 10-2 spurt to win the third set, 25-15, and the match.
Minyo and sophomore
Alexis Cummins (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) paced Cedar Crest with nine kills apiece while first-year
Ellise Everett (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona ) finished with six kills. Junior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) registered a double-double of 19 assists and 17 assists while classmate
Rebekka Sanchez-Castro (Columbia, Md./Atholton) recorded a match-high 20 digs.
Junior Evora Kaiwi (Pearl City, Hawaii) tallied seven kills for the Ravens. First-year Isabella Reilly (Abington, Pa.) had 17 assists and Green recorded 13 digs to lead the visitors.
Match Two – Gallaudet 3, Cedar Crest 1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-18)
The Falcons took the opening set, 25-18, but Gallaudet rallied to win the final three sets to win the match in four.
The Bison built a 17-9 lead after a block by junior Emily Wright (Penn Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Anya Pothorski (Indianapolis, Ind.). Cedar Crest crawled back to within five following a Gallaudet error, but the Bison went onto take the second set by a 25-14 score.
Gallaudet edged the Falcons 25-23 in the third and 25-18 in the fourth to capture the victory.
Senior
Kelsee Schouppe (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) guided the Falcons with 11 kills while junior
Ava Grapsy (Macungie, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) turned in another double-double of 29 assists and 17 digs.
Wright had a match-high 16 kills for the Bison.
Cedar Crest (4-6 overall, 1-0 CSAC) hosts Saint Elizabeth University in a league match on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m.
